Assumption: you use Debian Linux/GNU on an Intel machine (regular 
PC or laptop) and login through a graphical login.

full screen for a terminal window: click the second icon on the
top right of your window.

To switch to a full screen terminal login: Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or 2 .. 6)
To switch back: Ctrl+Alt+F7
