You ARE aware that your tutorial covers the ancient and obsolete Cyrus IMAPd
version 1.5, don't you?

Get v2.1 from http://people.debian.org/~hmh/ or cyrus21-* packages in
unstable and sarge.

For instructions on how to setup the thing, read
/usr/share/doc/cyrus21-doc/README.Debian.simpleinstall.gz

SSL, pop-before-smtp/imap-before-smtp, POP3, IMAP, and server-side
threading, filtering, sorting, etc are all available with v2.1.

I tried this a while back and was put off by the configuration of SASL. It was more than "trivial" and for me was a major barrier in using Cyrus.

I think part of the problem was that there was no functional SASL upon installation, just the files.

Do you know if this has changed in the last ~6 months?

I've been really impressed with what I've been able to find out about Cyrus, but the SASL installation on Debian was more of a Security Research project than an installation.

Are there any plans to incorporate SASL as an integral part of the Debian security model or leave it where it is?

My limited experience on SuSE was that SASL was very functional and well integrated. That a few other goodies made SuSE look rather impressive, but they had a number of serious shortcomings that I really don't think I will consider another commercial distribution for my personal use. The "support" available was not on par to Debian.

But that still leaves me curious about SASL on Debian.
