If you have physical access to the machine, try booting with a Knoppix CD.
It runs Linux from the CD, so it doesn't make any changes on the hard drive.

If Knoppix will run on it, Debian will too. Be aware though, that Knoppix is
a Frankendistro -- it's a mix of stable, testing and unstable packages.
