You should explicitly select one to install.
# apt-get install c-compiler 2>&-|awk '/^ /{print $1}'|xargs -r dpkg -l|grep ^i

ii  gcc-3.3            3.3.1-0pre0        The GNU C compiler

Indeed I see I have a "subscription" to every new version, with no
automatic mechanism to get rid of the old. Is this the ideal situation?
