Did so: suggestion there was that either gimp1.2-print not installed (it was) 
or printer not set up in gimp - it wasn't.  Worked as soon as I set it up.

lpstat works fine.  Probably a KDE thing, then.  I'll just stick to the 
commandline methods for now...
