I prefer internal modems because it limits my cable mess. :) I know
plenty of people who prefer external modems because they are easier to
debug.
That being said, the USR 2976/5077 shows up as a serial port (one with
an unusual IRQ by default, but stilly a serial port). My
'configuration' was to plug it in and point the dialup software to
/dev/ttyS4.
