run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and try playing with the 
resolutions, drivers, colors, etc.  Choosing something simple like VESA 
or VGA and 8-bit color might get you to a "success!" point, which will 
help you feel like you're making progress. Then you can work on getting 
things configured more properly.
