Ok, I'm obviously confused.

$ apt-cache show xlibs | grep ^Depends
Depends: xfree86-common (>> 4.2), libc6 (>= 2.3.1-1), libfreetype6 (>=
2.1.3-5)

In sarge, package xlibs depends on package xfree86-common above
version 4.2.

So, on a standalone Linux box, how can a box running sarge (a modern
distribution) use XFree 3.3.6 without *lots* of recompilation?
