well, my lilo.conf is as follows

boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda2

label=LinuxOLD

I suspect the problem is because the /boot directory is blank because
since the / mount point is reiserfs and can't mount, it can't get to
/boot ...
and I can't run lilo even after doing a chroot to /dev/hda1 as it
complains about missing files in /boot
