Try the laptop with (a) a selection of known good CD-Rs that someone else has burned and (b) a selection of known-good pressed CDs. It is not impossible that the laptop's CD drive's lens needs cleaning. Due to the usual upside-down, back-to-front design of CD drives and the equally dead and chewed performance of lens-cleaner CDs, this will probably involve taking the drive out of the laptop and dismantling it fairly thoroughly. Very gently clean the lens with a cotton bud thoroughly soaked in isopropyl alcohol, then very gently dry it with the other end. Don't try this if you're not happy with dismantling fiddly mechanisms. -- Pigeon Be kind to pigeons Get my GPG key here: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x21C61F7F
