my last reboot I fsck'ed my hda7 (/mp3), which I had ignored before
because it didn't seem so important, and mounted my root filesystem
read-only. X is running fine and everything seems perfectly stable
again. Of course I can't really do anything.. I'm just watching it at
the moment

Yes, I agree. My unstable debian partition is far more reliable than my
Win2k one. This week marks both installations' 1 year anniversary
and, even though I barely use it, the win2k one really suffers from
entropy. (to be fair, it was never quite the same after being 
re-installed with Sony's "System Recovery Disk" at the time)
