partitioning sun hard drive

hi,

i have a sun ultra 5 and am trying to partition the hard disk.

it is an 8 GB and even though i delete all the partitions using fdisk
(during install), when printing the partition table. it only shows 4 GB
being available to create partitions on.

it used to have solaris installed on it, i dont know how that affects
things.

also i read that the 3rd partition has to be of type 5 (whole disk), can
somebody explain this.

one other thing, during boot the kernel says 

hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
