I would've thought adding another layer of indirection would just make it more complicated. At it's simplest, just add FontPath lines to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and, um, er, that's it. Unless you're using sid with fontconfigified programs, where you have to add one more directory to /etc/fonts/local.conf.
