In addition to Google, did you try looking at the driver source files?
Somewhere, many weeks ago, I installed a Maxtor (Promise OEM'ed)
Ultra-ATA card, and had to research this pretty thoroughly.
There is a boot-time kernel switch, something like "ide=reverse", that
may pertain to the problem you are experiencing. Also, note that I am
running 2.4.18 with patches applied (it is my expectation that that
patch code is already present in 2,.4.20). The patches came from Promise
themselves.
