Chucking an unwanted kernel driver

Somehow, back in the initial system configuration, I enabled the cdrom.o
module. Since I do not have the hardware it is meant for (some old
custom CDROM interface), I want to replace that driver with the ide-cd
driver (I have IDE/ATAPI). Unfortunately, using either modconf or
rmmod, I recieve the error: "Device or resource busy" and the module is
not unloaded. How can I overcome this? I can't get ide-scsi emulation
to work until this pest is gone.

I looked around in /etc/modules.conf, but I didn't see anything related
to the driver in question.

I even tried renaming the driver out of the way, to no avail. The
kernel found it anyway.

Thanks for your help,
Jonathan
