from what I've read this doesn't always work, it seems not a lot
of testing goes into the ports before they are released. much like
debian's unstable tree. I've encountered several ports over time
that did not install at all(though not a whole lot).

and many ports don't have much work put into them(e.g. many
daemons don't even include a working init script).

though I do use freebsd in my NIDS systems I really hate the
ports system myself :( like the kenrel though for networking
related tasks.
