dpkg-reconfigure slapd returns
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: slapd is broken or not fully installed
debconf-communicate - that did the trick with the question. However,
after answering "No" it backed up the database and then failed to
restore it. Luckily this is only used for testing at present (can't
think I want to run unstable for the live box :-) ). apt-get wouldn't
remove slapd until it had configured the new slapd package though.
Still - all sorted in the end.

Will do so. Thanks.
