Thanks Derrick, Shri, Jesse, all very useful advice. I'll plug away at
this, my next big challenge. I do want to do things the Debian Way
(TM), otherwise it defeats the purpose of going with this distro.
Reckon I'm not doing too badly considering I had no *NIX knowledge a
year ago at all.
In the meantime I did manage to get wxWindows 2.4 going.
That was by adding
/usr/local/lib
/usr/local/bin
~ to /etc/ld.so.conf
