Rain on my parade, will ya?

Let me try to quantify as best I can...

Granted, the hdparm change could have been a figment of my imagination,
though the kernel patches and X drivers made changes I could see and
hear. But adding hdparm to a startup script only took a minute of work,
so there really wasn't much invested in it.

After patching the kernel, mp3 playing stopped skipping altogether,
which was happening before any time the system got just a little busy.
That included a lot of mouse movement, loading openoffice, or watching
spamassasin filter mail, all of which caused skipping. One of the
patches was the preemptible kernel patch which is geared toward making
the system more responsive.

Updating the X driver made such a change in the common GL demos that
they looked almost silly because they were going so fast. Moving large
windows used to be a fairly slow process, with lots of redrawing and
such, but stopped flickering and become responsive with better hardware
acceleration. Dabbling with gimp felt faster to me, but that's also
subjective.

Video playback via mplayer went from intolerable to pretty darn good
after the kernel and X driver changes. I don't know which one worked
the most good as I didn't specifically test any videos between the
two updates.
