I would recommend going directly if possible.  If that doesn't work,
make sure you can resolve DNS.  If that works, try telnet
ursine.dyndns.org 25 If my box doesn't respond or you get connection
refused, either my roommates managed to break the snap off my rj45
again (good luck, I wedged everything behind the book case and
duct-taped the cable to the kitchen floor, if in doubt, ping it), or
your ISP won't let you use anything but them as a smarthost.  Then use
your smarthost.

If you're on dialup, always use your smarthost since large portions of
the net blackhole dialups.
