They were being silly. If you're new to Debian, and you don't know all the bits and pieces that you need, then tasksel is a great way to install big piles of packages. As you learn more, you'll probably stop using it completely, though. > Well I tried the following: > > apt-get install x-window-system-core > apt-get install gnome-session gnome-control-center gnome-panel Looks reasonable. Except you don't have a window manager. Gnome likes sawfish or metacity the most, so install one of them. > Unless I install gdm, x-window don't even start as Kent West told me because > there are no x-client running. Well, yeah, again this is because you have no WM installed. Install one, and it'll become the default, and 'startx' should magically work. > if I install gdm, X starts at boot, but I run in following > > 1. I can't logon as root That's a feature, not a bug. If you need to do something as root inside X (which is rare), you can use 'sudo' or 'sux'. > 2. I have no idea how-to configure shell prompt boot again ctrl-alt-f{1,2,3,4,5,6} will give you access to the six running vt's. Or you can purge gdm to get rid of it forever. Or you can run '/etc/init.d/gdm stop' to stop it for a while. > 3. It's pretty much the same across distros, though, except that other's probably hide it better. Reading this list will give you an amazing education in all things Debian, though. > A second question is: Debian doesn't use linuxconf? No. Does anyone? Last time I tried it, it was buggy as all hell, and corrupted some config files. That said, it seems to be available in Debian, so you could certainly use it if you felt the urge. As someone else said, though, you're much better off learning how to edit the config files by hand; nearly all the ones in Debian are well commented enough that you can play with them with very little knowledge :-) -- Rob Weir <rweir@ertius.org> http://www.ertius.org/ GPG keys: 1024D/1E73B7CD, 4096R/3ABDE5EC | Do I look like I want a CC?
