I find this useful in my .xinitrc:
if [ -z "$XAUTHORITY" ]; then
XAUTHORITY=$HOME/.Xauthority
export XAUTHORITY
fi
YYMV. You could also just do this:
# echo SET debconf/frontend dialog | debconf-communicate
