RPM has suffered so much fracturing it's more useless a format than getting a tarball of source and doing it yourself. Interdependencies on individual files, inconsistency in naming packages and proper placement of files has plagued Red Hat based distros longer than I've used Linux. Given the choice between fighting RPM and just double-clicking on a setup icon, is it any wonder so many folks tried Red Hat or Mandrake and went screaming back to Windows, fear and loathing Linux? I firmly believe RPM is the worst thing to ever happen to the Linux community. -- .''`.
