Ah, sorry; didn't think about you possibly using a 2.2x kernel. I believe you'll need a 2.4x kernel to use ext3. If you want to stick with 2.2, just leave your /etc/fstab set to ext2 and go on with life; you don't need to "undo" your "tune2fs -j" procedure.
