There actually is a kernel option/filesystem usbdevfs
that is separate from devfs. If you used devfs you
probably wouldn't need usbdevfs, since I think they
would serve the same role (though devfs does more than
usb devices). I believe you can use usb devices
without usbdevfs, but you may have to use different
userspace tools and I would imagine you would need to
create a mount point in /dev. Your easiset option
might be to compile a new kernel with usbdevfs
support. Also, there are many usb related options in
the kernel for specific drivers -- mass storage
devices, mice, etc. -- that you may need.
