boot deadlock

Dear Rob:

  In the 2.4.20,  the last line of boot is
start pppd link---------------------------------

then everything stop there no matter what keyborard I push
after I enter save mode, fsck /dev/hdc2
startx
it showed
hostname(none)

but I do put a line in my /etc/hostname
www.linuxspice.com

and it work before

also pppoeconf
it can detect a card but another pppoe may use it

also since it is stop at pppd, so I want to rename or remove /usr/bin/pppd,
but my mv or rm both not work
read only file(I did submit my root 's password)
