Kent, thanks. As you suggested i did some proper research to find out some specifics and 
i re-ran the xserver-xfree86 config, with `dpkg-reconfigure', which you also suggested.
Another poster Anthony, also helped point me in the right direction, with some helpful 
server comments. As it turns out, the important info for me to know was: 
chips + technologies CT65555 2mb cache ( use chips, not vga);
HSync 31.5-37.9; VSync 40-70, generic monitor, 800X600. 
when i re-ran the config with these specified values all was well. 

Once again debian user's help is the best in the land, dell and M$ can't pay people 
enough money to provide help like this.
