A possible (but if you have the default setup unlikely) reason that you may 
have have some issues either round virtual hosts and those directives to 
recognise .php extensions may be inside one of those.

Another possibility (again somewhat unlikely) is that you have 
UseCanonicalName set to off and you are using an old browser which doesn't 
supply the host name it called with
