yeah, that's my understanding, i just can't seem to tweak things in
the right order.  thanks, and i will keep tweaking.

however, i realized this afternoon that i have a more serious problem
than just LC_COLLATE not being set correctly -- the mouse
cut-and-paste works between terminals, but not between terminals and
gui applications (i'm talking about opera here).  it displays a pasted
URL as something like: @ŕ@ !@ŕ 

help, please?
