As others have suggested, you can try both and more. My personal favorite
is XFce ('apt-get install xfce'), which is very lean while being
compatible with all GNOME and KDE apps (so long as the appropriate stuff
is installed). It can give you Debian, GNOME, and KDE user menus. Visit
