oh hello! some goof up by me here. when i tried to send mail to myself it worked!
mail sandip@deshmukh.work
some garbage

cc:

and voila - i do mail and it is available!

when i try sending mail to remote addresses, it freezes with an error. here is the error file:

Message 182QRU-0000KN-00 has been frozen.
The sender is <sandip@deshmukh.work>.

The following address(es) have yet to be delivered:
deshmukh@escortsmumbai.com: lookup of host "192.168.100.1" failed in smarthost router some1@somewhere.com: lookup of host "192.168.100.1" failed in smarthost router some2@somewhere2.org: lookup of host "192.168.100.1" failed in smarthost router
  etc@etc.etc: lookup of host "192.168.100.1" failed in smarthost router

here is for reference again, portion of my exim.conf file.

######################################################################
#                      ROUTERS CONFIGURATION                         #
# Specifies how remote addresses are handled #
######################################################################
#                          ORDER DOES MATTER                         #
# A remote address is passed to each in turn until it is accepted. #
######################################################################

# Remote addresses are those with a domain that does not match any item
# in the "local_domains" setting above.

# Send all mail to a smarthost

smarthost:
  driver = domainlist
  transport = remote_smtp
  route_list = "* 192.168.100.1 bydns_a"

end

this is similar to shyamal's conf file except that i have ip address where he has a name.

Did you chose smarthost or not? If you picked smarthost, what is your
smarthost?

yes. i did choose smarthost - although i do not know what does 'smarthost' mean and what is smart about this host.

    Sandip> in windows i used to use the nt server's ip address as
    Sandip> smtp server address and it would work. it still works in
    Sandip> linux/ mozilla combination.

    Sandip> how do i do it? ideally, i will NOT like to depend on the
    Sandip> nt server to send my mails out. can that be done?

Where does your nt server send it's mail to? Does it use SMTP?

well, nt server is lan server and it has some merak mail installed on it for serving mail.

however, given a choice, i will like *not* to use this for my outgoing mails.

thanx for all the help
