Actually Java is making decent inroads into game development. They have a 3D library now, and it is only getting better. I don't think it is too slow to make any kind of game. It is just slower than C++ which is slower than C which is slower than assembly. Basically, it is not too slow for serious game development. It is just that more people use C/C++ than Java, although Java games do exist. Just check the Independent Game Developer contest entries.
