Fire up mc
With your mouse click on the tab at the top that says "Left"
Click on "Tree" That should get you the setup you want.
Click on "Options"
Click on SaveSetup That will make it work every time.
That's how it works here ;-)

Start an xterm/aterm/rxvt whatever and type mc at the prompt.
