well, i tried and could not. am i too dumb?

Highly unlikely!

or just new to linux?

maybe - welcome!

Fire up mc
With your mouse click on the tab at the top that says "Left"
Click on "Tree" That should get you the setup you want.
Click on "Options" Click on SaveSetup That will make it work every time.

That's how it works here ;-)

and is there a X equivalent?

Start an xterm/aterm/rxvt whatever and type mc at the prompt.

tried it. works - somewhat!

1. save setup doenst help! it starts in the same old two pane formar!

2. in left pane,i have 2 click a directory to make it appear in right pane!!

wish it were 'automatic'!

last - come on - a console application in an xterm is not an X application! (i know linux this much)

;)
