sound finally works!

i compile sound as module and use sndconfig, it's OK.
Surely Debian is hard to use.

Excellent! I'm glad you got that working!

but X still does not work.

though only 1M, it support 800x600 with 16bit color in
Win95. i could afford a new old card. i found an i740
card on eachnet(China's ebay) for 57 yuan or $6, but i
don't want waste money. i play no 3d game, so 9680 is
enough, except for X 4.0?

"horizontal and vertical settings" are filled
according monitor's manual, so it's not problem.

let me repeat my trouble, i enter xinit, X starts, and
the background is OK, the only app (i install no
window manager) is xterm, but it has trouble. the
screen has several rectangles of xterm, their sizes
vary, i can see two prompt... in a nutshell, its
behavior is weird.
So have you tried changing from VESA to SVGA? Or even VGA?

Also, have you tried cycling through the available resolutions with Ctrl-Alt-PlusOnTheNumberPad or Ctrl-Alt-MinusOnTheNumberPad?

Also, you might try dropping the horizontal and vertical values; dropping shouldn't hurt your monitor, and can sometimes force X 4.x to use a different configuration that can produce different results. It's counter-intuitive, but it's worth a shot.
