New user can't compile

Hi

I've been trying to compile Sylpheed 8.0 and MGA Powerdesk on my new
Debian 3.0 system.  When I run configure, in the former case it says it
can't find glib-config and in the latter it says it can't find gtk-config.
 Neither can I.  What packages do I need to install to get round this
problem?

I assume I've goofed with the installation. When I installed, in tasksel I
selected everything in the development section except Fortran.
