just use window manager?

is it possible to only use a window manager (e.g. enlightenment)?
or it must go with something else (like gnome) because i can't seem
to find that option in the login prompt... i'm installed several
window manager, such as enlightenment, window maker, etc. but it only
shows up in the gnome wm selector...

i've tried changing the display manager (thinking that it might work),
but it seemed that i am stuck with gdm and can't go to kdm, wdm, or xdm
(i've tried to change the default-display-manager file by commenting
out the gdm path and add in the xdm path in /usr/bin/X11/xdm (if i recall
correctly) but it didn't seem to work, so i changed it back by commenting
out the newly added stuff and restore the old path but that didn't work
either, couldn't even go back to gdm... so i deleted the new added
stuff and restore the old line of /usr/bin/gdm and i could start gdm on
boot again...)

anyone any idea how to just use a window manager without the desktop
environment (such as gnome and kde)?
