A kernel crash would kill _everything_.  You'd have to hit the Reset
button, or maybe even the power switch.  However, unless you are 
running "top" on the console, or the active xterm window, sometimes
it's hard to tell between crashes and hangs.

However, if you suspect a crash/hang and can telnet/ssh in from another
machine, you know that it's only the console that is frozen.
