FYI: My "Debian Reference" below documents easy set-up on Debian stock
2.4 kernels. See: 7.2.4 EXT3 filesystem ( > 2.4.17)

  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-kernel.en.html#s-ext3

By the way, on my woody box.

osamu@goofy:~$ apropos ext3
fs (5) - Linux filesystem types: minix, ext, ext2, ext3,
xia, msdos, umsdos, vfat, proc, nfs, iso9660, hpfs, sysv, smb, ncpfs
fsck.ext3 (8) - check a Linux second extended file system
mkfs.ext3 (8) - create a Linux second extended file system

osamu@goofy:~ $ apropos ext2
debugfs (8) - ext2 file system debugger
e2fsadm (8lvm-10) - ext2 filesystem / LVM administration
e2image (8) - Save critical ext2 filesystem data to a file
e2label (8) - Change the label on an ext2 filesystem
ext2online (8) - online (mounted) ext2 filesystem resizer
ext2prepare (8) - ext2 filesystem resizing preparation tool
ext2resize (8) - GNU ext2 filesystem resizer
fs (5) - Linux filesystem types: minix, ext, ext2, ext3,
xia, msdos, umsdos, vfat, proc, nfs, iso9660, hpfs, sysv, smb, ncpfs
fsck.ext2 (8) - check a Linux second extended file system
mkfs.ext2 (8) - create a Linux second extended file system
pygettext2.1 (1) - No manpage for this program, utility or function.
resize2fs (8) - ext2 file system resizer

Many ext2 tools can be used on ext3 filesystem. Just remount them as
ext2. You just loose journaling. Heck if you do ext2resize, do you
care? I do not consider resize is critical.

If you read manual for debugfs, it has a word ext3. So it is aware of
ext3.
