When you select files to install, I think the state is stored in
/var/lib/dpkg/status. The prior state before you made your selections
is /var/lib/dpkg/status-old.

If you:
mv /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/my_screw_up
cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
dselect

You should be back to where you started.

Now I don't profess to be a dpkg/dselect expert, so you may want to check
this out with the package maintainer before you try it. Or maybe
someone else on the list can comment on whether this will get you what
you want.

I would also want to backup my system before mucking around with these
files.
