Generally speaking, do as little as possible as root. You don't need
root privileges to build Debian packages at all; just install fakeroot
and run 'dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us' (or 'debian/rules build;
fakeroot debian/rules binary' if you prefer').

Yes, and the dependencies of the 'build-essential' package too.
