on my box, this is what ls -al /usr/share/cups/data/psglyphs returns:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        14956 Jan 19 23:58 

apart from the install date, yours should look much the same. if not, maybe 
you need to reinstall cups.

i've never run a print job as root, using cups. have you tried printing as a 
user?
