I set this up ages ago and vaguelly remember. Its all in the Thin-Client
HOWTO on linuxdoc.org.

As well as setting up XDMCP on your display managers (gdm/xdm) you need
to start an X server on a free VT with it set to look for the XDMCP
server.

Have a look at the startx script which calls the X programme. Doing it
by hand you may do something like 

X :1 -broadcast

or specify it with something like...

X :1 vt09 -query xdcmphost.domain.com

This should start up X and greet you with the display manager screen
from the remote host.
