modem/pppd troubles

[please cc me on replies]

high,
i operate two machines, a laptop with a 56k pcmcia modem, and
a desktop with an external 33.6k non-name modem. both run custom
2.4.17 kernels and pppd 2.4.1 from woody. i can't get the desktop to
function like the laptop - it keeps losing the connection.

a couple of points:

both have kernel configuration of ppp with async tty support, bsd
compression and deflate support. both have all these modules loaded.
however, only the kernel-image of the laptop provides slhc.o, and
i can't seem to figure out what kernel option is responsible. in the
meantime i copied slhc.o from the laptop to the desktop and loaded it
there without troubles.

while i can establish and maintain connections to a provider with the
laptop for hours on end, the desktop usually loses the peer within
minutes - running a ping in the background usually prolongs that, but
i haven't been able to stay connected for longer than 5 minutes.
bloody modems! this is what i get:

pppd[18398]: sent [LCP EchoRep id=0x5 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x6 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: rcvd [LCP EchoReq id=0x6 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: appear to have received our own echo-reply!
pppd[18398]: sent [LCP EchoRep id=0x6 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: sent [LCP EchoRep id=0x6 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x6 magic=0x1c842308]
pppd[18398]: appear to have received our own echo-reply!
pppd[18398]: No response to 4 echo-requests
pppd[18398]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.

this is the same phone line, the same provider, just a different
kernel and a different modem. this very modem _appears_ to work just
fine on the serial port of my laptop, so it's got to be a kernel thing
afaik... here's the kernel config diff, irrelevant info stripped:

'<' lines are laptop
'>' lines are desktop

is this in any way helpful? how do i create the slhc.o module?

any help appreciated!!!

please CC me on replies!
