gv: various font errors, "code 1 in findfont"

I'm finding gv is almost unusable under Sid due to font errors, e.g.:

The file I'm attempting to read in this case (others produce similar
errors) is:

gv/gs version:

    gv package: Version: 1:3.5.8-22
    gs package: Version: 6.51-5


I've got a feeling this is related to font paths.  In my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4, I have the following fontpath lines:

        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
        FontPath        "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
        FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/truetype"
        FontPath        "/usr/share/abisuite/fonts"

I've also got two sets of type1 fonts:

    /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
    /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/
