My experience was similar; I could compile it for my desktop but not for
my laptop. Thanks to your earlier version of binutils, I was able to
compile the laptop version - I am grateful.

Unfortunately, I still have the original stability problem with 2.4.17
on my desktop: i.e. it locks up totally when the modem is running, but
quite unpredictably. I shall have to continue using 2.2.20 for the
foreseeable future.
