Right, that's the problem. You didn't read /usr/share/doc/nis/
nis.debian.howto.gz did you, it's all spelled out in there.

In particular, /etc/nsswitch.conf needs to read:

passwd:		compat
group:		compat
shadow:		compat
netgroup:	nis
