It has the same format and purpose as the .xsession file.

There are disappointing few man pages for GNOME apps and file formats
anyway. Maybe there is something about .gnomerc in one of the GNOME
manuals. Have a look at the scripts in /etc/gdm/Init, which gdm runs
depending of which session you have choosen in the GUI.
