But I thought that the nvidia drivers supplied their own direct rendering
framework, therefore bypassing any "official linux" DRI stuff in the 2.4.x
kernels. IIRC, the DRI project does not support the nvidia GPUs, and that's
why we can't use it, and why we do need the nvidia drivers.

Of course, I could be wrong, in which case I'd love to know what the
situation really is.
