I use 

Emacs*menubar*background: gray
Emacs*menubar*font: -monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-*-90-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1
Emacs*menu*font: -monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-*-90-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1
Emacs*menu*background: gray

in my .Xresources.
